Have you ever dreamed of an incredible vacationmaybe a tropical island or an amazing national park? but you’ve never made it. You’ve settled into the same old vacation.

Maybe you did venture out to someplace different and your experience FELL FAR SHORT of your dreams?

Keep reading because I can really relate to both.

Hello! I’m David Gilhousen, and I help active, mature travelers to experience heart-touching moments in charming or majestic places that will rejuvenate you.

I grew up reading National Geographic and watching Westerns, dreaming about placing myself in each photograph and scene.  But all my parents did was take me to the same New Jersey beaches for vacation!  Then, my college studies, career and young family got in the way of my travel dreams.

Perhaps your travel dreams have been put on the back burner?  I can identify.

My first chance for a bucket list trip came at our tenth anniversary. Unfortunately, my travel experience fell far short of my dreams.

We visited Costa Rica and discovered that:

  • Only registered tours could visit the best wildlife-viewing locations in their national parks.
  • Their commuter airline had conveniently lost our reservation in favor of one of these tours. So…
  • We had to drive five hours over pot-holed roads to reach our jungle retreat instead of flying there in 30 minutes. Very stressful!

I had made the mistake of avoiding a travel professional to save money.  I ended up spending more on the vacation and seeing much less.  Penny wise and pound foolish.

Unfortunately, that’s not the only travel mistake that I made.

During an especially crazy period in my life we signed up for a convenient Caribbean cruise. We had hoped to taste island life at each port to see which one we’d like to visit later.  But one crowded cruise port looked like another and I ended up photographing more snorkeling fins than fishes during a crowded “snorkeling adventure”.  Again, not what we were after!

But I couldn’t put down this dream to travel that God had put in my heat. When my schedule became free, my inner nerd emerged, and I became a travel junky.  I devoured guidebooks, reviews, and YouTube videos.

I found there really were unspoiled places out there.  But most casual travelers never heard of them!

We started traveling to UNCROWDED,AUTHENTIC PLACES – like:

  • Bonaire in the Caribbean for incredible snorkeling,
  • Florida’s Forgotten Coast for art and birding, and
  • Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for vibrant fall foliage.

Some of these places looked like they came right out of a holiday movie.  How neat is that!

On and on we traveled – going to over 40 U.S., Canadian, Caribbean, and Costa Rican places in the last decade.  Some trips were only 4-6 day getaways, while others went over a week.

Our friends expressed interest as we posted photos and wound up taking them along. Some suggested a blog, and I started one.  Others wanted me to book reservations for them, so I studied to become a travel agent.

Through my parent travel agency, I have connections with other agents and suppliers. So, I  know people who are experts in:

  • Western National Parks,
  • small boat tours in Alaska and Hawaii,
  • Costa Rica adventures, and
  • snorkeling/scuba diving in the Caribbean.

This means that I can plan an itinerary based on your desires, my travels, and locals who know their area.

So what does this mean for you?  Satisfaction.

Our friends and customers are still talking about their travels!  Many have traveled to a bucket-list destination and had it turn out better than they imagined.  We have built close friends through the experience and that gives us great joy.

I believe that getting professional travel planning advice is the most effective way to maximize the value of your trip.

So, don’t delay. Give me a call to discuss how I can plan your next hallmark travel moment.

O.K. So you want to know more about me….Somwhow I knew I’d travel because my childhood hobbies were collecting maps and time tables. Then, when I met Denise, I actually gave her a survey when we were dating to see if our travel interests were compatible!  Now that’s being obsessive.

Since I retired from being a meteorologist, we chose to do a lot of domestic or North American travel: 5-6 day getaways. Why?  As a rent-a-professor, I often had a week between classes and Denise led weekly Bible studies.

My hobbies include photography (most of the photos here are mine), snorkeling, and working out.  I also enjoy the perverse sport of weather forecasting (read my weather blog) , the challenge of outdoor grilling, and the quest for recent nutritional findings to stay healthy.

About Denise….I love the tropics! I lived in Hawaii during key parts of my childhood and moved to St. John in the Virgin Islands to lead snorkeling tours right after college.  A hippy at heart, it took me a few years to settle down, move back to the states, and look for Mr. Right.

I found him in this awesome guy from New York who wanted to know if I loved mountains and autumn leaves and hockey games! Somehow, that didn’t stand in the way of our relationship and many wonderful years of marriage.  Yes, I nixed the winter getaways — until recently — but agreed beaches weren’t the only place to relax and unwind.

In recent years, we have experienced some gorgeous destinations that have relaxed and inspired us.  We seem to be at our closest during these travels, and that’s one of the reasons why we wanted to share them with you.

Painting landscapes and picturesque homes has become one of my passions recently. So, on our travels, I am continually scouting for that “perfect breathtaking scene” of light and color and nature. We find many hidden gems as well as the ones that are well-known and well-visited. But my favorites are the unexpected places and moments that touch happy memories from childhood or the past.
